As October brings Cooperative Month, Pioneer Telephone Cooperative stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, living out the principle of “Cooperation among Cooperatives.” Across Oklahoma, we’re partnering with electric cooperatives and other local organizations to expand high-speed fiber connectivity to rural residents—because working together transforms communities one connection at a time.
Pioneer’s partnerships with Cimarron Electric Cooperative, Oklahoma Electric Cooperative, and CentraNet (the fiber division of Central Electric Cooperative) embody what cooperative spirit looks like in action. By sharing resources and construction costs, we reduce disruption for rural customers while expanding opportunities for reliable, affordable internet access. These joint projects help bridge the digital divide and empower rural families, students, and businesses with the essential digital tools they need.
Lately, cellphone companies have been advertising “5G Home Internet” with tempting sign-on prices. But not all internet is created equal.
5G Internet is designed for mobile use. While it offers faster speeds than older cellular networks, it can struggle inside homes and rural areas. Signals can be blocked by buildings, performance often slows during peak hours, and some providers throttle data once usage caps are reached.
Fiber Internet, by contrast, delivers the fastest and most reliable service available today. With speeds often exceeding 1 Gbps for both upload and download, fiber offers unlimited data, low latency, and consistent performance—even in times of heavy demand. That’s why fiber is considered future-proof technology.
In many places, especially rural areas, 5G simply isn’t a realistic solution for families who need reliability for work, school, and business. Through cooperative partnerships, Pioneer is building the infrastructure to ensure that small towns and rural communities aren’t left behind. Fiber internet isn’t just about speed—it’s about opportunity, connection, and growth.
“Cooperation among cooperatives is a guiding principle we live by," General Manager Blake Callaham said. "In Oklahoma, great things are happening because we believe in doing what’s right—and it works.”
As we celebrate Cooperative Month this October, we honor the transformative impact of these partnerships and reaffirm our commitment to bridging the digital divide. Together, we’re ensuring that rural Oklahomans have access to the kind of internet that powers the future: fiber.
